After 6 seasons in the smaller classes, which included the 2004 125cc Championship title, the Italian entered the MotoGP ranks on the satellite Honda of the JiR Team Scot. His debut appearance saw him beat Valentino Rossi to fourth in Qatar and take his first podium at the penultimate race of the year, finishing 5th in the championship, the highest placing non-factory rider. The successful rookie season was enough to convince Repsol Honda of his talents, and the Italian moved to the factory team in 2009, taking his first MotoGP win at the British GP and claiming a pole position at the Motegi round. \'Dovi\' remained with Repsol Honda for a 3rd season in 2011, riding in a 3 bike team alongside Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa.
